Charla has illustrated the varied elements of the unique sport of golf in this special Name Portrait. The dedication of the golfer to his or her sport is the key theme of the design.
Golf terms and golf equipment are woven throughout the picture in word and drawing. The sometimes challenging weather is symbolized by the sun and the rain cloud. The history of golf is represented by the Scotsman and the crowns of James IV and Mary Queen of Scots.
Golf was developed in Scotland in the 1400’s. The majority of Scots loved golf so much that certain people were afraid that it would take the place of the national sport of archery. As a result of this fear, Parliament banned golf in 1457. However, King James IV began playing golf in around 1490 causing the law to no longer be enforced. The first woman golfer is said to be Mary Queen of Scots. In her famous trial, one of the charges against her was that she played golf in the days following her husband's murder. By doing so Mary was thought to show no remorse at this death. This caused a question as to her innocence. Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded in 1587.Golf did not arrive in the United States until 1888 when the first golf course was established in Yonkers, New York.
was created with pen and ink, color pencil and vintage embellished collage pieces.
