In Charla's design of
, she combined photographs of vintage fire fighting equipment with pictures of modern equipment. She used OLD JAKE as a central figure. OLD JAKE is a weathervane which lived atop the Charley Rouss Fire Company in Charla's hometown of Winchester, Virginia. The vane was placed on the building somewhere around 1850. For almost 140 years OLD JAKE has beenoverseeing the Winchester skyline. His new home (for at least a while) is at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. The quotation Charla found to complete her illustration is very old and very meaningful. The words are relevant for today's brave firefighter who is symbolized by OLD JAKE.
The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it.
